High-volume groundwater ingress can occur when designed seals, joints or waterproofing systems fail to perform under the groundwater pressures encountered during construction or operation. Direct Inject provides specialist injection solutions to control significant water inflows, allowing critical construction activities to proceed and restoring watertightness to affected structures.

High-Flow Groundwater Control.

Every groundwater ingress challenge is different and requires the injection strategy to be developed around the structure, water path and required outcome. Key considerations include the rate and pressure of water ingress, whether the structure is temporary or permanent, the distance the injected material needs to travel and the characteristics of the surrounding ground or structural interfaces. These factors influence product selection, including viscosity, reaction time and expansion characteristics. Where structural or sprayed concrete linings are present, expansion must be carefully considered to avoid introducing pressure that could contribute to cracking, debonding or delamination.

Typical Water Paths & Injection Solutions

Leaking Retaining Structures – Groundwater ingress through joints, interfaces and defects in diaphragm walls, secant piles and associated linings. Injection locations are selected based on available drawings, construction records and observed water paths.
Leaking Ground Anchors – Groundwater ingress through or around anchor penetrations where the sealing arrangement has failed or become compromised. Targeted injection is used to intercept and control water around the anchor and surrounding interfaces.
Failed TBM Launch & Reception Seals – Injection to control significant groundwater ingress following failure of TBM launch or reception seals. Fast-reacting systems can be selected to suit the flow conditions, required travel and available reaction time.
Leaking Precast Gasket Joints – Injection of leaking joints where precast gaskets are displaced, damaged or inadequately compressed. Applications include segmental tunnel linings, precast pits, chambers and other underground structures.
Construction Joints & Waterproofing Terminations – Targeted injection of groundwater pathways at construction joints and waterproofing transitions or terminations. Injection can be undertaken behind the structure or directly through the affected interface.

Ground Treatment
& Injection.

Ground treatment is often required ahead of complex underground construction where existing ground and groundwater conditions do not meet the requirements established for the proposed works. Following geotechnical and hydraulic assessment by the project designers, Direct Inject can be engaged early to review the specified treatment objectives and work alongside the project team and specialist material suppliers to develop a practical grouting, injection, verification and testing strategy.

Ground Treatment.

Direct Inject provides the specialist personnel, pumping equipment and injection systems required to execute ground treatment works against defined project requirements and acceptance criteria. Depending on the treatment objectives, works can involve OPC and microfine cement grouts through to multi-component acrylate gels with variable and controllable reaction times. Where required, we work alongside the project team and material suppliers to undertake pre-production trials, testing different products, mixes and injection parameters to help establish the most suitable solution before full-scale works commence. We then support the planning, execution, verification and reporting of the production works through to completion.

Typical Applications

Pre-Production Trials – Site trials undertaken with project teams and material suppliers to assess proposed grouting systems. Trials can compare products, mixes, reaction times and injection parameters to establish the required production methodology.
Pre-Excavation Ground Treatment – Grouting and injection undertaken ahead of excavation to improve ground or groundwater conditions. Typical applications include deep shafts, pits, station boxes, basements and other retained excavations.
Breakouts & Open-Face Tunnelling – Targeted ground treatment before breaking through tunnel linings or retaining structures. Applications include cross passages, adits, tunnel-to-shaft connections and other open-face excavations.
Groundwater Cut-Off & Curtain Grouting – Installation of grout curtains or treated zones to reduce ground permeability and groundwater movement. Applications include shafts, pits, tunnels, retaining structures and other below-ground excavations
