NorthConnex was a major motorway tunnel project in Sydney, providing a direct connection between the M1 Pacific Motorway at Wahroonga and the Hills M2 Motorway at West Pennant Hills. The project involved the construction of approximately 9 kilometres of twin tunnels and was designed as a drained tunnel system, managing groundwater through controlled drainage rather than a full waterproof lining. Excavation was primarily supported using rock bolts and a shotcrete lining system, allowing safe progression through Sydney’s underlying Hawkesbury sandstone and shale formations.
Direct Inject were engaged to perform cementitious structural crack repair of the shotcrete lining along the full length of the tunnel system over an 18 month period. An inspection and test coring campaign was also implemented to confirm the successful repair of the lining.
